Spotlight on a Subject: Spanish

Pencoed 6th Form learner Annabella Lewis receives Student of the Year award for A Level Spanish.

In our ‘Spotlight on a Subject’ series, learners past and present reflect on their experiences studying different subjects at Pencoed 6th Form Centre. Here, Annabella Lewis, from the Class of 2023, looks back on her time in our International Languages department.

Taking Spanish A level was one of the most enjoyable and interesting subjects I opted for. I thoroughly enjoyed delving into not only the cultural and historical side of the course, but also the grammar and literature side. It is a well-rounded A level, and it has given me skills that I will be able to utilise in university.

I particularly enjoyed learning about Franco and the Civil War, as it gave me an insight into what life was like for Spaniards during this difficult time, something that I had not considered before. I also loved reading ‘Requiem por un campesino español’. This was challenging, as it was the first novel I had read entirely in Spanish, yet it was gripping and highly enjoyable.

Spanish A level provided me with confidence to read texts and write essays, as well as listen and respond to conversations in Spanish , which I did not have before. As I enjoyed Spanish A level so much, I decided to begin a Modern Languages degree at the University of Bristol. I will have the opportunity to build on the knowledge of topics I started at A level.

I would definitely recommend taking Spanish A level, to gain invaluable skills and knowledge to utilise in the future. To study a course that is relevant and up to date in the world, as we often found new news articles and incidents that happened in the Spanish speaking world.
