Level 3 Applied Extended Certificate in Sport
The Applied Certificate/Extended Certificate in Sport is a new course being offered for September 2025, and offers a more vocational approach, providing learners with knowledge, understanding and skills associated with the sports sector.
Year 12 - Applied Certificate
- Unit 1 - Health and Wellbeing is the only externally examined unit of the course, worth 20% of the overall qualification. It covers key components and topics related to health and wellbeing, including the benefits of physical activity, sports injuries, and rehabilitation.
- Unit 4 - Sports Pedagogy and Coaching is worth 30% of the qualification, and is assessed via coursework. Knowledge and practical skills meet as lerners plan, deliver, and evaluate coaching sessions, using theory to inform how they meet participants needs and improve performance.
Year 13 - Applied Extended Certificate
- Unit 2 - Improving Sporting Performance is the second mandatory unit of the course, a non-examined assessment worth 20%. The unit explores the difreernt factors that can influence sporting performance. Learners will develop their analytical skills, reviewing performances, and learn about different strategies to apply for improvement.
- Unit 3 - Preparation for Sport and Physical Activity is worth 30% of the qualification, and is assessed via coursework. It explores the links between the components of fitness, and introduces different ways to establish, maintain, and improve sporting performance.
The two year course is equivalent to a full A Level, and results are awarded at A*-E grade. Learners will undertake a combination of classroom and practical sessions.
