A Level Government and Politics
WHAT THE LEARNERS SAY:
"Government and Politics is my favourite subject! Our lessons are informative and enjoyable. I have gained a better knowledge of current issues around the world, allowing me to broaden my understanding of the ethics, values, and opinions that surround them."
Everything we do in life boils down to politics. From the things we can and can't do, to the values society holds; politics is found within all. This course provides learners a wide scope as to the ongoings of the UK government and beyond. It develops your critical thinking skills, ability to analyse, interpret and discuss information; your ability to make informed judgements. You will look at information from your own perspective, and that of political theories, governments, and political parties.
A vast content is covered, looking at our own Welsh politics, and comparing ot to other political systems of the world. We explore topics such as devolution, the British Constitution, human rights, democracy, voting habits, nationalism, the American political system, and much more! As well as a qualification, Government and Politics provides enormous potential for personal development.
The course takes place across two years, and is structured as follows:
- AS Unit 1: Government in Wales and the United Kingdom - Written examination, 20%
- AS Unit 2: Living and Participating in a Democracy - Written examination, 20%
- A2 Unit 3: Political Concepts and Theories - Written examination, 30%
- A2 Unit 4:Government and Politics of the USA - Written examination, 30%
As you can see, this is an entirely exam-based subject, with an emphasis on literacy. As such, we advise at least a C grade in English and the understanding of the effort involved. Those who perform well in the subject often have an interest in politics, regularly watch the news, and read around the subject themselves.
The course is run by Miss Evans and Miss Mullen-Jones, both of whom hold degress in Politics and International Relations.
WHAT THE LEARNERS SAY:
"As someone who didn't know much about politics, this has fast become my favourite subject! It has really opened my eyes to the world around me, and given me a new perspective on a number of topics."
