One of our learners has achieved a Gold Certificate in a national competition, run by the UK Maths Trust.
Keen Mathematician Luis, in Year 13, was entered for the Senior Mathematical Challenge earlier this month. Learners from around the UK sit a 90 minute, 25 multiple choice question paper, under exam conditions. The questions got progressively more difficult, and candidates were even advised that they would most likely not complete the paper!
Not to be detered, Luis, who plans to study Mathematics at university, went on to achieve the ‘Gold Certificate’, only awarded to the top 6-7% of entrants! This means he qualifies to compete in a two further rounds of the competition – Kangaroo and Olympiad. Well done Luis!
Challenge yourself – below is an example question from the test – how would you do?!
Wenlu, Xander, Yasser and Zoe make the following statements:
- Wenlu: “Xander is lying.”
- Xander: “Yasser is lying.”
- Yasser: “Zoe is telling the truth.”
- Zoe: “Wenlu is telling the truth.”
What are the possible numbers of people telling the truth?
A: 1 or 2, B: 1 or 3, C: 2, D: 2 or 3, E: 3
